MEXICAN
AMBASSADOR PAYS COURTESY CALL

Minister Robert Pickersgill confers with Mexican
Ambassador, Senora Leonora Rueda when she made a courtesy call on
him recently.
Mexican
Ambassador to Jamaica, Senora Leonora Rueda paid a courtesy call
on Minister Robert Pickersgill at his Maxfield Avenue Office on
Friday, June 23, 2006.
In
welcoming the Ambassador to the Ministry, the Minister noted that
both Jamaica and Mexico shared a long standing relationship. For
her part, Senora Rueda expressed her delight at meeting the Minister
and pledged that she would do everything to strengthen the bonds
between Jamaica and Mexico.
She
used the opportunity to discuss a range of issues with Minister
Pickegsill and other members of the Ministry. Among these were matters
concerning Bi-lateral agreements with Mexico on Technical Support,
Tourism, Trade, Culture, Business and the fight against drugs.
Minister
Pickersgill also used the opportunity to give an update on the Air
Services Agreement between Mexico and Jamaica. This agreement which
was signed in 1975, allowed each country to designate one carrier
to provide scheduled service between Mexico and Jamaica up to seven
times per week. After the agreement expired in 1981 and several
attempts to revive it, the latest is that an Air Policy Committee
discussed the matter on June 22 of this year with a view to having
further concrete discussions by the last quarter of this financial
year.
Other
matters of interest to both countries that were discussed included,
the acquisition of Catosa Benz buses for the JUTC, accessing the
San Jose Accord and low income housing. Toll Roads came in for discussions
also as new initiatives for financing Toll Roads were explored.
Others
in the meeting included Mrs. Elsa-May Binns, Senior Director, Policy
Planning and Evaluation in the Ministry, Mr. Keith Goodison, Special
Assistant to Minister Pickersgill, and Mrs. Genefa Hibbert, Director
General.
