MTW GETS ASSISTANCE FROM EU

The European Union, through the European Development Fund (EDF) will provide funding of some $1.7BJ as grants to four projects in Jamaica.
Among them is the Support to the Road Sector Programme which will fall under the purview of the Ministry of Transport and Works.
This Project aims at assisting the Government of Jamaica in strengthening and improving road maintenance operations. This particular intervention has two components. The first is for an amount of 10 Million Euros which is provided through sector budget support to the road sector to assist in implementing road maintenance plans.
The second aspect of the initiative is for an amount of 2.25M Euros which incorporates a project aimed at strengthening the capacity of the Jamaican institutions involved in road maintenance; these being the Ministry of Transport and Works, the National Works Agency, the Department for Local Government and Island Traffic Authority.
The other three projects are (a) the rehabilitation of the Negril and Ocho Rios Waste Water Treatment Plants (b) a technical co-operation facility and (c) Institutional Strengthening of the Planning Institute of Jamaica.
This was disclosed by Prime Minister Bruce Golding during a Press Conference at the Office of the Prime Minister on Monday, December 3, 2007.
Continuing, the Prime Minister lamented the deficiencies in capacity building and policy formation in the Jamaican landscape. 'We have to pay greater attention to using personnel and human resources in a more effective way," he said.
For his part, Minister of Transport and Works, Hon. Mike Henry gave an assurance that projects falling under his Ministry would be executed in a timely fashion. He also thanked the EU for its assistance.
Others in attendance at the signing were, Dr. Wesley Hughes, Director General of the PIOJ; Ambassador Marco Mazzochi-Alemani, Head of delegation, European Commission; Mrs. Genefa Hibbert, Permanent Secretary in the Minister of Water and Housing and Mr. EG Hunter of the NWC.
