The Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) and the Road Safety
Unit (RSU) partnered on a pedestrian crossing painting project in observance of
Road Safety Month (June). This took place on Sunday, June 21, 2009.
The two entities, both important stakeholders in road safety,
successfully executed the painting of a number of pedestrian crossings in the
corporate area. They both highlighted the fact that pedestrians are a
significant category of road users and in that vein wanted to do their part in
facilitating their preservation.
Several crossings in the Kingston Metropolitan Transport
Region (KMTR) were identified and on the 21st of June, they were
painted. Each depot of the JUTC identified two crossings for which they would be
responsible. Crossings identified and depots choosing them were those at
Excelsior, Vauxhall High Schools and the Jamaica Society for the Blind –
Rockfort Depot; those at the Jamaica Police Academy and the Spanish Town Prison
Oval painted by the Spanish Town Depot; those at Portmore HEART Academy and
Ascot High School were painted by the Portmore Depot while the service depot at
Asheneim Road was responsible for that at the Cockburn All Age School and the
St. Paeter Claver School off Waltham Park Road.
Each crossing was painted by staff from the JUTC and was supervised
by the National Works Agency. The paint was provided by both the NWA and the
JUTC.
