Minister Pickersgill breaks ground for the erection of the Linstead Transport Centre; with him is 'Rising Star' finalist, Lenya Wilks who is from the Minister's constituency
A delegation led by Minister Robert Pickersgill broke ground for the erection of the Linstead Transport Centre on Tuesday, July 24 on the proposed site in Linstead, St. Catherine.
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Pickersgill said, "My vision for Linstead is no different from the one I have for the entire country: the Jamaican transportation system should be
developed to first class, world class standards, be affordable and accessible by all."
He noted that the journey on the path to achieving that vision (erection of the Transport Centre) started with the construction and opening of the Linstead Taxi Stand which was opened
in December, 2006. He highlighted the fact that those persons who commuted to the communities of Wakefield, Banbury, Ewarton, Bog Walk. Lluidas Vale and Orangefiled were benefiting from the convenience and comfort that facility provided.
The construction of the Transport Centre is expected to last approximately 4 months at an approximate cost of $25M. On completion, the modern centre will accommodate 450 taxis and 53 buses.
The NWA has been contracted to carry out the first phase of the project which will include:
- Fencing, stripping and clearing of the site
- Grading to required levels
- Filling and compaction of the area
- Construction of storm water drainage, laying of water and sewage disposal pipelines; and
- Construction of curbs and installation of interlocking paving stones.
Building construction activities will include:
- Construction of covered waiting area for commuters with destination signs
- Pedestrian walkways
- Concession areas
- Sanitary conveniences
- A security post and
- A Taxi Association Office
These latter facilities will be completed in the second phase of the project
