The JUTC and the UAWU signed an agreement concerning a rationalisation exercise at the JUTC on Wednesday, January 30 at the Ministry of Transport and Works’ Maxfield Avenue Corporate Office.

The agreement which was facilitated by Transport Minister Hon. Mike Henry and President of the UAWU, Mr. Lambert brown commences on Friday, February 1, 2008. Among the provisions under the Agreement are:

  • No delegate position will be made redundant, save and except those requested and approved by parties.
  • Approximately 256 Customer Service Agents will be made redundant.
  • The redundancy exercise in respect of CSA’s will commence on a phased basis at 100 CSA’s per week starting Friday, February 1 and to be completed by Friday, February 29, 2008.
  • The payment schedule for the staff rationalisation will be subject to the approval of the Ministry of Transport and Works.
  • 84 driver positions have been identified for redundancy and the parties have agreed to meet with a view to discussing workers currently employed in those positions and who have a good accident record. There will be no re-consideration for drivers with poor accident records.
  • Drivers who voluntarily requested that their positions be made redundant will be considered by the JUTC.
  • The process of staff rationalisation of drivers and CSA’s will be completed no later than February 29, 2008.
  • The parties agree to review any case of redundancy raised by the UAWU on the basis of exceptional humanitarian grounds.

The parties agreed that the terms of the Agreement shall continue in force between the JUTC and the UAWU in relation to the staff rationalisation.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Henry said he was pleased at the conclusion of the Agreement and said effort had been made to make the process fair and transparent. For his part, Mr. Lambert Brown, President of the UAWU heaped praise on Minister Henry, who he said went to great lengths to broker an agreement with the parties.

Also speaking at the signing ceremony, was chairman of the JUTC, Mr. Douglas Chambers who said that he was looking forward to continuing efforts at streamlining the JUTC to a path of profitability.
