Prime Minister Bruce Golding along with Works Minister Mike Henry and representatives from the Ministry of Transport and Works and the National Works Agency toured sections of the flood ravaged Ocho Rios on Friday, April 18, 2008.

This followed heavy rains which lashed the tourist town late Thursday night/early Friday morning. Ocho Rios and its environs suffered from numerous cases of mudslides, landslides and road scouring as a result.

Both the PM and Minister Henry expressed regret for the damage that was done to the area and sympathy for those affected. They both promised to do everything possible to alleviate the problems with a view to getting back the town to normality.

Currently, cleaning of much of the affected areas is taking place courtesy of the National Works Agency (NWA). They are also engaging in the wetting of certain sections of the town where dust nuisance is occurring. Over the upcoming days, material for the re-instatement of certain corridors, will be trucked to the area while the cleaning of drains should be concluded.

Meanwhile, Minister Henry commissioned into service five traffic lights while on the tour of Ocho Rios and its environs. These are located at Mammee Bay, Jack’s Hill, Salem, Runaway Bay and the Brown’s Town/Runaway Bay intersection. All the lights are part of the recently handed over Segment Two of the North Coast Highway Improvement Project (NCHIP). Segment two of the NCHIP runs from Montego Bay to Ocho Rios. Segment Three spanning the areas of Ocho Rios to Port Antonio is currently under construction.
