Aeronautical
Telecommunications Limited (Aerotel) is a government-owned company
incorporated in 1978. In
1998 Cabinet gave approval for Aerotel, which is responsible for
the provision of aeronautical telecommunication network and radio
services in Jamaica, to become a subsidiary of the Civil Aviation
Authority (CAA). Aerotel
is also governed
by the Civil Aviation Act. Prior to this, Aerotel operated as a
separate entity from CAA, maintaining all digital wave-links and
air traffic telecommunication for the Authority and is also governed
by the Civil Aviation Act.
On
November 1, 2001 Aerotel began operation of a radio Station, “Kool
97 FM”. Kool 97fm is mandated by its license to encourage tourism
by portraying a positive image of Jamaica.
It is 80% music, adult contemporary, and carries no newscasts
however, flight schedules, weather conditions and other information
relevant to the traveling public, is broadcast hourly.
