The
Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) was established in 1998 under
the Public Passenger Transport Act to operate public passenger transport
in the Kingston Metropolitan Transport Region (KMTR). Initially
the JUTC began by operating the school bus service in September
1999 and in 2000, another franchise, CONURBAN which operated in
the Papine and Spanish Town areas, was taken over by the JUTC. Negotiations
between the Ministry and the National Transport Cooperative Society
(NTCS) concluded on March 7, 2001 with the Ministry taking over
that franchise. A full take-over of the KMTR took place on
April 23, 2001.
