Western Hemisphere Transport Initiative

You Need: -

A valid certificate of fitness.

A valid insurance certificate or cover note.

A receipt and invoice from the motorcar dealer.

A copy of the original import entry (C78) signed by Customs and two photocopies.

A Taxpayer Registration Number (TRN).

A letter of authorisation along with the company stamp if the application is for a company.

Private import - original and copy of import licence.

 

To register and licence a new vehicle, you need to complete an application form for new registration plates. This form is available from the Collectorate of Taxes. You also need to complete an application form to register and license the motor vehicle and for a title. You then pay the required fees and collect appropriate receipts. The title may be collected in approximately 12 weeks.

Your registration plate receipt should be kept in a safe place, you will need it if you are to transfer your plates to another vehicle at a later date. Motor vehicles can be licensed for 6 to 12 months.

 

Renewing A Motor Vehicle Licence

 

You need: -

 

The expired motor vehicle registration certificate,

A valid certificate of fitness,

A valid insurance certificate or cover note

Your Taxpayer Registration Number (TRN).

 

Transferring A Motor Vehicle

You need: -

· Certificate of title

Registration certificate

Valid insurance cover note in the buyer’s name

Valid identification e.g. Passport, driver’s licence

Valid certificate of fitness, TRN

Letter of authorisation along with company stamp if application is for a company

If a lien is attached to the vehicle, the discharge of lien is needed.

 

Both parties (seller and buyer) should attend the tax office with the necessary documents.

If the documents are found to be in order the transfer is done on the reverse side of the title in the presence of the Collectorate of Taxes. The transferee (buyer) pays the transfer fee and collects receipt. The transferee (buyer) pays the required GCT (second sales tax) on vehicles, which are eight years old and under, based on the cc ratings or cwt/kilo rating.

The transferee (buyer), if already in possession of registration plates, should submit to the tax office the relevant receipt documents for verification. This should be done before attaching the registration plates to the vehicle purchased.
