| The Ministry of Transport and Works was formed on September 14, 2007 ending its association with the Ministry of Water and Housing which dated back to March 31, 2006. This is the second occasion that the Ministry is so known as between January 1998 and March, 2006 it carried that moniker. The Ministry’s primary responsibility is the country’s land, marine and air transport as well as the main road network, including bridges, drains, gullies, embankments and other such infrastructure. |

The Ministry has regulatory responsibility for the safety of all modes of transportation, whether publicly or privately operated. This includes airports, aerodromes, airline operators, seaports, shipping traffic, public land transportation as well as road infrastructure and road safety. Specifically, the system is comprised of 15,394km of road network covering the entire island (844km of arterial roads, 717km of secondary roads, 3,225km of tertiary roads and 282km of urban roads), 800 bridges, 330km of rail track, a large fleet of public passenger buses, two international airports, four domestic aerodromes, ten specialised seaports and three public deep-water ports. There are currently twenty-one reporting entities that assist the Ministry in fulfilling its mandate to provide a safe and efficient transport system and the construction and maintenance of quality roads and attendant structures. The Ministry of Transport and Works continues to facilitate the growth of the country through the discharge of its duties in accordance with its mandate of providing a modern, safe, reliable and sustainable transport system and works infrastructure. |
