The
Ministry of Housing, Transport, Water and Works was formed
on March 31, 2006, when the former Ministries of Water
& Housing, and Transport & Works were joined to
form one Ministry. The formation of the ‘new’
Ministry was one of the Cabinet changes announced by the
newly appointed Prime Minister the Honourable Portia Simpson-Miller
(O.N.,PM).
The
former Ministry of Transport and Works was created in
January 1998 and included functions and programmmes drawn
from the former Ministries of Local Government and Works,
Public Utilities and Transport. While the former Water
& Housing Ministry was formed when the housing portfolio
split from the Ministry of Environment and Housing and
merged with the Ministry of Water.
Through its various agencies, including the National Works
Agency, National Housing Development Corporation, National
Water Commission the Ministry fulfills its mandate of
providing a safe and efficient transportation system,
the building and maintenance of quality roads for its
populace and others who have to travel on them, the building
of affordable, safe and legal housing solutions, as well
as to provide the Island with adequate supply and suitable
quality of water for domestic and commercial purposes.
