FLANKER, ST. JAMES, Jamaica: The Government’s commitment to delivering certificates of title to residents saw forty-two (42) persons in the community of Flanker, being added to the more than two thousand Jamaicans who have already benefitted under the Ministry of Transport, Works & Housing’s National Titling Programme.
While delivering the keynote address at the Titling ceremony held at the Flanker Community Centre on Friday, January 30, 2015, Minister without portfolio in the Ministry of Transport, Works and Housing, Dr. Morais Guy stated that “Time has come…time has come for every Jamaican to be a part of the ownership society, time has come for those who have waited more than fifty years to reap the rewards.”
In examining the economic development of the programme, Minister Guy noted that “there is a potential increase in GDP by 0.5 – 1 percent”.
Since its launch in 2012, the comprehensive national titling programme has made strides in streamlining and formalizing schemes that have suffered from informal settlement.
The Ministry developed Flanker Housing Scheme some forty (40) years ago comprising three hundred and ninety-eight (398) lots which were marketed. Currently, the Ministry of Transport, Works and Housing is embarking on an exercise to market the lands in the Red Dirt community to ensure that these residents become land owners and are placed in a position to contribute to the economic development of their country.
The issuance of these forty-one (41) titles by the Ministry will add to the one hundred and five (105) that have been distributed by the Housing Agency of Jamaica Limited, an agency of the Ministry since 2012.
Also in attendance at the ceremony were, MP for the area, Dr. Horace Chang, Mrs. Scarlette Gillings, Managing Director of the Jamaica Social Investment Fund (JSIF), Mr. Charles Sinclair, Councillor for the area, Mayor of Montego Bay, Councillor Glendon Harris, Custos of St. James, Mr. Ewen Corrodus, Pastor Andre Wallace who offered prayers, Mrs. Doreen Prendergast, Chief Technical Director in the Ministry of Transport, Works & Housing as well as other officials from the Ministry.
