As part of his familiarization tour of Agencies falling under his Ministry’s portfolio, Hon Mike Henry on Wednesday, September 14, 2016, met with members of the Mines and Geology Division of the Ministry of Transport and Mining.

The Minister highlighted the fact that he was pleased to be sharing time with the staff, noting that it was part of the learning curve since taking up Office in February. He pledged to work assiduously with the staff to achieve the potential of the mining sector, especially against a background where the sector has been identified as one of the four growth pillars for national development.

Turning to some of the specific areas affecting the mining sector, the Minister said he would be paying special attention to geotechnical concerns, the return of mined out lands to productivity and housing on mined out lands as some that would be receiving his early attention.

He commended the staff for their dedicated service, noting that the Division had won several awards in national competitions over the years.

Meanwhile, Commissioner of Mines, Mr. Clinton Thompson said he was pleased to have the Minister touring the Division; he used the occasion to give an overview of the entity’s mandate and explained that he along with his staff was eager to continue the push towards making the mining sector a significant player in the country’s economic development.

Accompanying the Minister on the tour were Dr. Oral Rainford, Principal Director, Mining and Minerals as well as Mr Bindley Sangster, Senior Advisor to Minister Henry.
