Project Goals

This project involved the acquisition and installation of three air traffic control radars to be sited at,
a. Mount Denham, Manchester
b. Montego Bay/Sangster International Airport and
c. Kingston/Norman Manley International Airport.

 

Raytheon Radar Project - Civil Aviation Authority

This project involved the acquisition and installation of three air traffic control radars to be sited at,
a. Mount Denham, Manchester
b. Montego Bay/Sangster International Airport and
c. Kingston/Norman Manley International Airport.

The estimated time for the completion of the project was August 2000 and cost was estimated at US$23M.

Funding was provided as follows,
EDC Loan - US$18.06M (Canada)
Citibank - US$4.4M (Jamaica)

In December 1997 the then Ministry of Public Utilities & Transport signed an agreement with Raytheon Canada for the supply, installation and commissioning of the 3 air traffic control radars.

With respect to Montego Bay/ Sangster Int'l Airport, Raytheon Canada participated in site surveys and selected a site at Norwood St. James, on a hill overlooking the Airport.

The facilities were completed and handed over to the Civil Aviation Authority as follows:

Mt. Denham - November 29, 2000
Norwood - March 9, 2001
Norman Manley - June 20, 2001

These systems were all inter-linked through a Harris Microwave Systems as part of the contract. Having failed initial testing the microwave system was re-engineered and finally handed over on November 29, 2001.
