Rehabilitation of Terminal Building and Associated Facilities This project, which is not a part of the ARIP, began in 1997 and is scheduled for completion in 2004. The project is estimated at US$13m, details follow;
This is to reduce the level of congestion experienced and include the general upgrading of floor lighting, air-conditioning and the provision of space to be used for concessions. The relocation of the staircase, construction of a new washrooms, procurement and installation of new elevators as well as the construction of a new canopy along the frontage of the Ticketing Concourse are also planned in this part of the project.
This project involves extensive demolition of existing sidewalk, kerb walls, concrete slabs and fencing. The entire parking area will also be resurfaced with asphaltic concrete and will provide for improved storm water drainage, airport signage and landscaping. The traffic-flow will also be streamlined and the layout of the new four-lane access road will facilitate efficient access to the “pick-up” “drop off” kerbs. Adequate pedestrian crossings and parking stalls for disabled passengers will also be provided. In addition a lay-by will be provided close to the terminal building for police, public transportation (buses) and tour buses. Holding areas for commercial taxis and rent-a-car concessions will be located within similar proximity. This project is estimated to be completed in October 2004.
The entire project consists of approximately 250,000 sq ft of new cargo space and ramp areas, which are to be linked to the taxiway/airside. This will facilitate the relocation of all cargo operations to this location, and provide for the expansion of the passenger terminal facility eastwards. In the first stage, slated for the 2002-2003 financial year, 40,000 sq ft of warehouse space will be constructed at a cost of J$273m. The building will also house the administration of Jamaica Customs. The drainage works for the cargo village area, adjacent property and vertical realignment on the dual carriageway, are also included in this project.
The facility will provide offices with adjacent work area for Customs & Immigration Officers. Security screening, pilot and passenger lounges and washroom facilities are in place and a 54 square metres motor vehicle parking area will be constructed to facilitate the users of this facility.
