The Port Expansion Project The PAJ is continuing to develop, expand, upgrade and modernize Jamaica's port facilities to provide appropriate infrastructural support to the country's economic and commercial life. A large-scale expansion is in progress with several phases now completed. On Wednesday 14, 2001 Prime
Minister P.J. Patterson officially opened Phase III of the expansion programme
of the Port of Kingston. This third phase of the overall US $100 million
development spearheaded by the Ministry of Transport and Works through
the Port Authority of Jamaica, has resulted in an increase of the Port’s
container capacity by 400,000 to 1.2 million. This development consists of 14 hectares of paved container parking area, 542 metres of berthing space and the most modern of lifting technologies:
