Hope Road Reconstruction and Improvement Project The project slated to last 18 months, resulted in a number of changes along the Hope Road strip from Kings House/Lady Musgrave Road intersection to the Mataildas Corner/Liguanea Road intersection. The contract, valued at J$240M was awarded to West Indies Home Contractors Limited (WIHCON) who started work on September 1, 1999. Works included widening and resurfacing of the road, the laying of sewer mains and laterals, storm water drains, replacement of fences on premises along the route where land was purchase for the widening of the road, installation of street lights and landscaping. Completion date for this project was set for September 30, 2000. Both the Ministry of Transport and Works and WIHCON agree that the project could not have been completed in the specified timeframe without the co-operation of the utility companies. The Jamaica Public Service Company, JPS had several utility poles to move and lines to relocate throughout the project, excavation of the roadways revealed underground wires that Cable Wireless had to relocate in order for work to progress, and the company responded when asked to do so. The water mains were laid for the National Water Commission NWC, so they were present for most of the Project. Hope Road re-opened as Two-Way Road on October 1, 2000. Basic work to the entrance of Kings House was also a part of the original contract but this was later upgraded to a reconstruction of the entrance and this was completed by the end of November 2000. |
